Collections of Sembène & Vieyra Workshop

May 27 - June 6, 2025

This 10-day workshop gives researchers with the Early African Cinemas Lab the opportunity to explore the Indiana University collections on early African cinemas with specialists and researchers from around the globe. These experts will consult the Paulin S. Vieyra archives held at the Black Film Center & Archive, opening for research that spring, and Ousmane Sembène’s archives at the Lilly Library. Days will be dedicated to exploring IU’s rich archives. In the evenings, researchers will present and discuss their work, and African films will be screened on campus; these events will be open to the public.

The Legacy of Ousmane Sembène & Paulin S. Vieyra

Public Event Series, May - June 2025

The Legacy of Ousmane Sembène & Paulin S. Vieyra is an event series which underscores the crucial role these two pioneers played in the formation of Early African Cinemas. In collaboration with Bloomington’s Buskirk-Chumley Theater as well as IU Cinema, the public will be invited to view African films and to participate in discussions with film critics, some of the filmmakers’ collaborators, witnesses from the period, and African Film specialists. This public-facing event series will thus contribute to the visibility of African Cultures, Francophone Studies, and Postcolonial Studies within both the Indiana University and Bloomington communities.
